Presenter Profile: Enrica Capelletto, MD, PhD

San Luigi Gonzaga Hospital, University of Turin, Italy

ILCN: What is your presentation about?

Dr. Capelletto: My presentation aims to raise the audience’s awareness of all the alternatives to conventional smoking that are available today. It’s not just e-cigarettes. We’re talking about heated tobacco products and nicotine pouches, health-related risk factors, as well as nicotine dependence.

ILCN: Why is this topic timely or important in 2025?

Dr. Capelletto: Because the tobacco epidemic is evolving on a global scale. Also, the marketing of new tools is changing and becoming even more appealing to young people. We need to protect them from the long-term health effects of these tools.

ILCN: How do you think public health messaging around alternative options needs to evolve with emerging evidence and findings?

Dr. Capelletto: Public health messaging about the new tools should focus on the urgent need to prevent nicotine dependence, particularly among young people. “Tobacco-free” does not necessarily mean “safe product.”

ILCN: What are you looking forward to the most during the 2025 World Conference on Lung Cancer?

Dr. Capelletto: Greater community awareness of the public health effects of smoking and the hope of a smoke-free world.

ILCN: What do you hope the audience takes away from your presentation?

Dr. Capelletto: I hope the audience will understand that the danger lies in the uncontrolled dissemination of new tools such as e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and nicotine pouches—particularly among young people—and recognize the importance of protecting them from the risk of acute and long-term health effects.
