The second of three Lectureship Awards sessions being presented at WCLC 2022 will take place tomorrow, Monday, August 8, beginning at 13:30 CEST in Hall C1.
Each year at WCLC, IASLC presents awards to clinicians and researchers who have made significant contributions to the treatment of patients with lung cancer. The awards represent many major categories of lung cancer research, from tumor staging to tobacco control and smoking cessation.
Awardees are invited to receive their awards and deliver a state-of-the-art lecture at the conference. The following awards and lectures will be presented during Monday’s Lectureship Awards session.
Robert J. Ginsberg Lectureship Award for Surgery
Professor Isabelle Opitz, MD, who is director of the Department of Thoracic Surgery and Chair of the Lung Cancer Center at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, will present the Robert J. Ginsberg Lectureship Award for Surgery.

In addition to her general thoracic surgery activity, Dr. Opitz’s professional interests include the treatment of pleural mesothelioma, lung cancer, and pulmonary hypertension. She is a member of numerous societies and current president of the European Society of Thoracic Surgery and international director of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. At IASLC, she is a member of the Mesothelioma Committee and the Staging and Prognostic Factors committee.
James D. Cox Lectureship Award for Radiation Oncology
Yuko Nakayama, MD, PhD, who is chief of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tsukiji, Japan, will discuss chemoradiotherapy for stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). While chemoradiotherapy followed by immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy is standard curative therapy in the Japan Lung Cancer Society and other lung cancer guidelines, in her lecture Dr. Nakayama will discuss how certain groups of patients may also benefit from local therapy.
Throughout her career, Dr. Nakayama has specialized in the treatment of lung cancer with (chemo)radiotherapy. She is member of the board of directors of the Japan Lung Cancer Society and has served as chair of the Lung Cancer Guideline Committee and chair of Lung Cancer Guideline Sub-Committee in the field of radiotherapy. She was also a member of the Guideline Committee of the Japanese Society of Radiation Oncology.
Heine H. Hansen Lectureship Award for Small Cell Lung Cancer
Medical oncologist Stephen Liu, MD, is an associate professor of medicine at Georgetown University. He is director of thoracic oncology and the head of developmental therapeutics at the Georgetown University Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Dr. Liu’s research focuses on rational drug development for lung cancer. He is an active member of IASLC, currently serving on the Communications Committee and as co-host of the official IASLC podcast, Lung Cancer Considered.
