IASLC recently reported its primary publication, the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, improved its impact factor from 15.609 in 2020 to 20.121 in 2021. The JTO, the official journal of the IASLC, now ranks 13th out of 245 oncology journals and 4th out of 65 respiratory system journals.
“JTO’s impact factor has quadrupled from 5.040 in 2015 to 20.121 in 2021. This is a testament to the exemplary work of our editorial board and our editorial manager as well as the support of IASLC—its executives, office staff, membership, and above all our reviewers, readers, and authors,” said Editor-in-Chief Alex A. Adjei, MD, PhD. “JTO will continue its emphasis on multidisciplinary research to serve the broad community working in thoracic oncology.”
Impact factors are measured by calculating the number of times journal articles in the two preceding years are cited in a current year. Thus, the impact factor for 2021 reflects the number of times articles published in 2019 and 2020 were cited in 2021. The higher the impact factor, the more highly ranked the journal. Journal citation reports are issued by Clarivate Analytics.
Get to Know JTO During WCLC!
Join Editor-in-Chief Alex A. Adjei, MD, PhD, for a Meet-the-Editor session during WCLC 2022. This session, which is open to all WCLC attendees, will take place Sunday, August 7, at 14:00 in Committee Room 1. Also plan to visit the IASLC booth in the exhibit hall to learn more about the journals, including how to become a reviewer.
The JTO is the primary educational publication for topics relevant to the prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment of thoracic malignancies. Emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach, the JTO includes original research, review articles, and opinion pieces. The audience includes epidemiologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, thoracic surgeons, pulmonologists, radiologists, pathologists, and basic scientists with a special interest in thoracic oncology.
In other news from the journal, Editor-in-Chief Dr. Adjei recently began a new role as the chair of the Cleveland Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Institute in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Adjei, who previously served as a professor at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, will lead a multidisciplinary team of clinical and translational researchers.
Dr. Adjei said he is honored and excited to have the opportunity to work with the Cleveland Clinic’s talented team at the forefront of cancer care.
Open-Access Companion
The JTO Clinical and Research Reports (JTO CRR), IASLC’s open-access companion title, also features novel research about the prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment of thoracic malignancies. The JTO CRR publishes a range of manuscripts from subset analyses of published trials to high-quality case reports and has had several of its own important milestones.
JTO CRR was indexed by PubMed and Scopus in October 2021 and looks forward to reporting its first impact factor in 2023. The JTO CRR began article-based publishing in January 2021. This publishing model allows an individual article to be citable in its final format upon receipt of the author’s finalized corrections, providing final citations more quickly for authors and colleagues to share on their professional and personal social networks.
IASLC Reviewer Workshops
While peer review is critical to academic publishing and research, formal training opportunities for young physicians and physician-scientists are limited. To improve reviewer performance and quality of manuscript reviews, IASLC, JTO, and JTO CRR conduct formal workshops to train reviewers. Training includes particular attention to making judgements about the impact of manuscripts, which is often the most difficult part of the review process.
In 2021, the editorial team provided a virtual reviewer educational session to six select members from Asia. During WCLC 2022, an in-person, pre-conference session for 16 European attendees will continue the education and development of reviewers in the field of thoracic oncology.
Visit the IASLC Journals Booth in the Exhibit Hall during WCLC 2022 to learn more about the journals, including how to become a reviewer. The full contents of JTO are a benefit for IASLC members. IASLC members receive discounted article publishing charges for JTO CRR.
